Dedicatted, an AWS Premier Tier Services Partner and Managed Services Provider, has earned the AWS Digital Sovereignty Competency. This makes Dedicatted the first and only Canadian AWS Partner to hold this designation.

The competency recognizes partners who have shown, through real customer projects, that they can help organizations keep full control of their data in the cloud. For Canadian companies in regulated industries, it means there is now a local, AWS-validated partner that can design, build, and run cloud environments where data residency, access control, and compliance are built in from day one

Before we say anything else about what that means for us, it’s worth explaining what it means, period, because the term gets thrown around more loosely than it should.

What is the AWS Digital Sovereignty Competency?

The AWS Digital Sovereignty Competency is part of the AWS Competency Program. It identifies partners with proven expertise in advising on and building for their customers’ sovereignty needs, using AWS services and controls. To earn it, a partner has to pass a technical review by AWS and show successful customer work that meets AWS’s requirements. It isn’t a training badge. It’s a check on work already delivered.

There is no single definition of digital sovereignty, but AWS groups it into four areas:

  • Data residency and security. You always know where your data is stored and where it moves, and you decide both.
  • Operator access restriction. No unauthorized person or party, including the cloud provider, can access your data.
  • Resiliency and survivability. Your systems keep running through outages, emergencies, or disruptions from outside your country.
  • Independence and transparency. You stay in control of data ownership and operations, including working with local technology vendors where needed.

Dedicatted has been validated across this framework, with customer work that put these controls into production.

Canadian companies shouldn’t have to choose between the cloud and control of their data. Being the first Canadian partner to earn the AWS Digital Sovereignty Competency shows our team can deliver both, and that AWS has checked the work. We’re ready to help more organizations across Canada build on AWS with confidence

Why this matters for Canadian organizations

“Where is our data, and who can access it?” – boards, auditors, and regulators across Canada are asking this more often. And “we think it’s in Canada” is no longer a good enough answer. Canadian organizations work under a growing set of privacy and risk rules. These include PIPEDA at the federal level, Quebec’s Law 25, provincial health information laws, and OSFI guidelines on technology and third-party risk for federally regulated financial institutions. Public sector teams often have their own data residency policies on top of that.

Until now, the AWS partners holding this competency were based in Europe and the US. They bring real expertise, but sovereignty is local. What works for GDPR in Frankfurt isn’t the same as what a Canadian bank, hospital, or ministry needs. With AWS regions in Canada (Central) and Canada West (Calgary), you can keep sensitive workloads in the country. The hard part is proving it: designing the architecture, controls, and governance so residency and access are enforced, not assumed. That’s the work this competency validates.

How Dedicatted helps you meet sovereignty requirements

We help you move from “we need to be compliant” to a cloud setup you can show an auditor. Our work typically covers:

  1. Requirements mapping. We translate the rules that apply to you into concrete technical and operational controls.
  2. Sovereign architecture design. We design AWS environments that keep data in approved Canadian regions, with guardrails that stop it from moving where it shouldn’t.
  3. Access control and encryption. We lock down who can reach your data, set up encryption with keys you control, and log every access.
  4. Resilience planning. We build backup, recovery, and failover so your systems stay up during an incident, without breaking residency rules.
  5. Compliance evidence. We set up monitoring and reporting so you can show, at any time, where your data is and who touched it.
  6. Ongoing operations. As a Managed Services Provider, we can run and monitor the environment for you, so controls keep working after go-live.

Compliance shouldn’t slow you down. With the right architecture in place, your teams can keep shipping on AWS while sovereignty is handled in the background.
